5 Reasons why winter makes you age

Is it bad I'm legitimately excited for Thursday?

Is it bad I’m legitimately excited for Thursday?

1. Staying in is suddenly so much more appealing than going out to the bar. I feel like a bit of a curmudgeon about it, but then again, I don’t really care. Guys, I think the last time I went out to the bar it was 50 degrees out. And even then, I’m pretty sure I was complaining about how chilly I was. But I mean, seriously. LOOK AT THIS FORECAST.

2. Napping. I just had one of those, “Oops I just fell asleep for two hours!” moments. Because, oops! I just fell asleep for two hours.

I bet you want a roommate that matches your decor now, huh?

3. Soup consumption. Eating nothing but soup for three months straight doesn’t sound gross or disgusting at all. It sounds good, appealing, fantastic even. Bring on the veggies! The potatoes! The cheese!

4. You’ll spend so much time inside your house or apartment, you will begin to get excited about the most menial things. Like vacuuming your rug, finishing a new crossword puzzle, mopping the salt out of your entryway, getting a letter in the mail, finding out your roommate matches your apartment decor, discovering that your streets have been plowed, and realizing your love for NPR. Wow. I just, I need to get out more.

5. Knitting. Today I knit two hats. Sorry, I am not sorry.

Looking Local: Leon & Lulu

10 Oct

This week, Curtis and I went to Leon & Lulu in Clawson, MI–right off of 14 mile! I drove past it a few weeks ago with my mom, and she mentioned that it used to be an old roller rink, so I just knew that I had to check it out.

Overall rating 4.5 out of 5

First off, this place is HUGE. I mention it a couple times in the video, but I promise you I’m not kidding. It’s the size of at least 3 football fields (please note the obvious exaggeration), and has at least one million things in it. From clothing to furniture, knick knacks and toys to frames and rugs–if it’s eclectic and fun, and you have no idea where something so exquisitely awesome could have come from, it’s probably at Leon & Lulu. Go there. Drop everything and do it now!

The only downside was price–but what else could you expect from the world’s cutest furniture/clothing/knickknack/home decor store on the planet? If I ever become a millionaire, I am buying everything in there. Every. Single. Thing.

What was also cool was that they definitely paid tribute to the roller rink–with roller skates lining the walls, along with memorabilia in the entry way. They even kept the original concession stand from the roller rink open and running. Popcorn anyone?

My advice? Check it out. I promise that you will enjoy every second of your time in there.

I’ve moved to a new place, and I’m looking local. If you have any suggestions for places I should try in the Detroit area, leave a comment, or give me a shout! You stay classy.

Sharing our winnings

Last night I went to a casino night at Munn Ice Area called “Dice and Ice” with a couple of my buds. It was an uuber fun event, and there was lots of free stuff being given away in a drawing at the end of the night. We played tons of casino games around the concourse,  wandered around eating free food for a bit, and ended up winning more tickets than we could handle.

Karli is apparently completely amazing at Bingo (guess it’s not just a game of pure luck) and Becky and Terry rocked the slot machines. Anywho, the point is, we had all these tickets to enter into the drawing, and because we weren’t staying to the end of the night, we had nothing to do with em.

So we went around and gave em to students staying till the end of the night. 72 tickets–a really really long strand of em– and we gave all of em away! It was super fun, and one dude even gave us  hugs. I wonder if any of em won?

Also, just a note: actively searching for opportunities to do random acts of kindness every day has seriously brightened me up. It gives me something to look forward to every day and, personally, I think that’s pretty neat. If you have ANY “random act of kindness” suggestions, please comment on this post, or shoot me an email at everydaybytay@gmail.com. Also, for more of my stuff, go to Everydaybytay.com.

Oh Hey There Mamasita!

31 Jan

Oh hey! I know you guys are definitely not totally sick of me blogging about my wonderful Momma, but right now I do actually have a legitimate reason! Today (well, yesterday now) is her birthday, and while I won’t disclose her age to you all (though she totally does NOT look as old as she is), I thought I’d count down my top 5 “Mom-Moments” for you.

5. That one time when my mom and I went ice skating up in Traverse City when I was about 7. It was so incredibly windy that day and I couldn’t even count the number of times that she fell over on the ice and dragged me down with her. It was hilarious and fun, but I don’t know if I’ll ever go ice skating with her again…

4. That one time, again when I was super little, when we were in Florida in a restaurant bathroom together. It was a one person bathroom and I was on the pot, doin’ my business.  Well, she had to go SO bad that she pushed me off the toilet, yelling “Get off! It’s my turn now!”

3. That one time, last summer, when we were walking back home from Caribou Coffee, and my mom saw a truck that she thought was a mattress truck delivering a mattress to our house. So, naturally, she ran after the truck. She did that. And I vlogged about it.

2. That one time, two days ago, when my dad and I forced my mom to go in the hurricane simulator at the mall in Okemos. I made a video about that one too.

1. That one time, all the time, when my mom has stayed up with me at night when I couldn’t sleep, when she’s read me Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books when I was sick in bed with the flu, called me multiple times in the day to talk about the new Modern Family episode, made sure that I have cookie dough in the fridge when I come home to visit, and sent me packages in the mail just to let me know she loves me.

I mean, yeah. I have a pretty awesome mom.

Merry Christmas!

25 Dec

Merry Christmas from the Benson side of the family! It’s just me, my bro, and my cousins Megan and Ryan on that side of the family, and we’ve got a slew of pics of the 4 of us all opening our presents on Christmas. We all look so happy! Especially Ryan, the blonde one closest to the camera, with his eyes closed. Good one, Ry.

Letter to Myself.

12 Dec

So I was going through old notebooks tonight in an attempt to distract myself from studying, and I found a letter that I wrote to my “future” self the night before the first day of my senior year of high school. Reading it again, I was astounded at how much I needed to see these words. 17-year-old me was truly something else.

Play-Doh Love.

23 Nov

Okay. I’ll admit it. I LOVE STOP MOTION. So here’s this short, sweet little vid I put together for you guys today. Meet Hugo and Harriet (I’m sure they’ll be recurring characters), which are, in real life, just globs of play-doh.

Watch and let me know what you think!
